Video for the small screen

The use of small screens such as iPhones, iPads and Smartphones to watch videos has increased over the past few years with more people choosing to use their devices to watch catch-up television, Youtube and other videos.

According to statistics by the BBC, iPlayer received 91 million TV requests in August 2011 from computers, mobiles and video games consoles, serving on average 1.2 million users per day. An average of 4 programmes, amounting up to approximately 69 minutes, were requested on a weekly basis in August 2011 by each user of BBC iPlayer. About 15% of the viewing was for live broadcasts whereas 85% was for on-demand shows.

In July 2011, the BBC launched a subscription-based, global iPlayer service (through the use of the iPad app) to 11 countries in Western Europe. The service was taken to the US, Canada and Australia later that year. The app supports features not available on the UK version of the app such as streaming over 3G and offline viewing.

More people are now watching TV and movies on tablets in their bedrooms than they watch on the TV. This means instead of watching programmes on the Television, people are now using their tablets in bed to watch films and TV shows. Also, people who own tablets are likely to watch more TV and movies than those who do not own a tablet. The reason being that people who own a tablet have more ways to watch TV programmes and films than those do not. On the other hand, Television sets are still the most dominant viewing device in the living room, but Smartphones and tablets are making strong inroads here, too.

Due to the rise of on demand apps and streaming sites and apps such as Netflix, which is only available on computers or as an app, using a phone or tablet to watch TV shows has risen. Netflix has a TV show which is only available to watch on its site, which makes people more inclined to watch it as they can view it on their way to work in the morning if they travel by train or bus. On demand services such as BBC iPlayer and itvPlayer also makes it easier for people to catch up on all the shows they have missed if they have been busy or if they go out. The use of these sites has increased due to students using them as if they cannot afford a TV license they use the on-demand sites, Netflix or other streaming sites to watch programmes they like.
