A parody or copyright infringement?
A video doesn’t have to go viral to make a big difference to a business, in fact it probably does better if it doesn’t go viral and is more targeted.
However, viral seems to be a bit of a buzz word at the moment, as does parody videos such as the hot video of last week which got over 7.4 million views and 200,000 Facebook shares! In fact the Goldieblox video from Princess Machine was topping the charts as most talked about last week.
The clip of the Beastie Boys hit ‘Girls’ which is included in the parody isn’t being quite so positively received. There are threats of legal action based around the idea that this is not fair usage and that the original copyright has been infringed. The action is being taken, so we’re told, in order to clarify the rights of the specific parties. It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out, especially since there seems to a lot more videos appearing on the web with slightly dubious music tracks claiming to be fair usage.
